On February 10, 2009, at approximately 7:39 p.m., the United States Park Police were notified of a pedestrian struck on the ramp from the southbound lanes of the Baltimore Washington Parkway to Route 50. The initial investigation revealed that a Nissan pickup truck bearing DC registration was stopped in the travel portion of the roadway. The operator of a Nissan Sentra bearing Maryland registration stopped behind the pickup to avoid striking the stopped vehicle. The operator of a tour bus, traveling in the same direction attempted to swerve to avoid a collision and struck the Nissan Sentra, a pedestrian, and a third vehicle, described as a VW sedan bearing New Mexico registration.
The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital for treatment where he was later pronounced. The deceased is identified as 41 year old Jose Fernando Gamez out of NE Washington DC.
The US Park Police Crash Reconstruction Team and Criminal Investigations Branch are currently investigating the collision. The ramp from the southbound Baltimore Washington Parkway to Route 50 was closed for the investigation.
