WASHINGTON – Rock Creek Park Superintendent Tara Morrison announced today that the upcoming window of action for deer reduction in the park is January 2 through March 31, 2014. These actions are part of the Rock Creek Park White-tailed Deer Management Plan.
Temporary night-time road closures will be in effect to provide for visitor safety during reduction activities. Extensive proactive safety measures will be in place to protect park visitors and neighbors. Highly trained marksmen from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, working under the direction of National Park Service resource management specialists and in coordination with the U.S. Park Police and local law enforcement, will conduct reduction actions at night when the park is normally closed.
The following road closures may be in effect from 9:30 pm to 4:00 am, when sharpshooting is underway: Ross Drive, Ridge Road, Glover Road, West Beach Drive; Beach Drive at Parkside Drive; Wise Road; Beach Drive from the Maryland line to Broad Branch Road, from Broad Branch to Tilden Street, and from Tilden Street to Porter Street, NW; Grant Road, Joyce Road, Sherrill Drive, Bingham Drive, and Morrow Drive.
