16th Annual Event Honors Local Police in Fight Against DUI

The United States Park Police would like to recognize Officer Matthew Manning for outstanding commitment in the fight against drunk driving. Officer Manning was one of twelve officers recognized on December 13, 2013 for their commitment in the fight against drunk driving and presented with the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) 16th-annual Law Enforcement Awards of Excellence for Impaired Driving Prevention.

The nonprofit Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) presented its 2013 Law Enforcement Awards of Excellence for Impaired Driving Prevention in memory of Metropolitan Police Department’s Motor Patrol Officer Anthony W. Simms. Officer Simms, succumbed to injuries sustained while on duty, by an impaired driver during Memorial Day weekend in 1996. WRAP’s 2013 Law Enforcement Awards were presented by Officer Simms’ widow, Lieutenant Pamela Simms, also formerly with the Metropolitan Police Department, along with News4’s (NBC) News Anchor Aaron Gilchrist.

Founded in 1982, the nonprofit Washington Regional Alcohol Program is an award-winning public-private partnership working to prevent drunk driving and underage drinking in the Washington-metropolitan area. Through public education, innovative health education programs and advocacy, WRAP is credited with keeping the metro-Washington area’s alcohol-related traffic deaths consistently lower than the national average. WRAP, however, may best be known to area residents via the organization’s popular free cab ride service for would-be drunk drivers, SoberRide®.

Wanted for Questioning

The United States Park Police Criminal Investigations Branch is seeking information regarding the individuals in the above photograph. On Saturday, January 19, 2013 at approximately 1000 hours, the victim in this case parked in the north parking lot of Carderock Park. The victim later noticed that her purse was missing from the vehicle. There were no obvious signs of forced entry into the vehicle, and no latent fingerprints were recovered. Credit cards and personal checks were taken from the vehicle. The checks were cashed at a drive through teller, Capital One Bank Minstrel Crossing, located in Columbia, Maryland. The photo above was captured at that bank location in Columbia, Maryland. The subjects shown in this photograph, a white male in the driver’s seat, and a white female in the passenger seat, are wanted for questioning regarding the theft from auto, uttering, and identity theft.

Rock Creek Park Announces Upcoming Deer Management Window of Action

WASHINGTON – Rock Creek Park Superintendent Tara Morrison announced today that the upcoming window of action for deer reduction in the park is January 2 through March 31, 2014. These actions are part of the Rock Creek Park White-tailed Deer Management Plan.

Temporary night-time road closures will be in effect to provide for visitor safety during reduction activities. Extensive proactive safety measures will be in place to protect park visitors and neighbors. Highly trained marksmen from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, working under the direction of National Park Service resource management specialists and in coordination with the U.S. Park Police and local law enforcement, will conduct reduction actions at night when the park is normally closed.

The following road closures may be in effect from 9:30 pm to 4:00 am, when sharpshooting is underway: Ross Drive, Ridge Road, Glover Road, West Beach Drive; Beach Drive at Parkside Drive; Wise Road; Beach Drive from the Maryland line to Broad Branch Road, from Broad Branch to Tilden Street, and from Tilden Street to Porter Street, NW; Grant Road, Joyce Road, Sherrill Drive, Bingham Drive, and Morrow Drive.
